I00 Years ago in Spokane Wash., Sonora Smart Dodd, who is the Mother that promoted the celebration of “Father’s Day”. Sonora Smart was 16 when Her mother died leaving William Jackson Smart to raise Sonora and 5 younger brothers on a farm in Eastern Washington. A civil war veteran, He was determined to keep the family together even though most men would have sent the younger children to live elsewhere. His hard work and love left an lasting impression on His daughter. When She was 17 years old and moved to Spokane and married insurance and businessman John Bruce Dodd and the couple had a son in 1909. That Year while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon, Sonora thought about Her Father and wondered why Fathers didn’t get their “Special”day.
Her Fathers kindness and sacrifices inspired Her to the idea of an annual celebration of “Fatherhood”,She convinced the Paster to deliver Fathers Day sermon on June 19,1910. In that time families wore red roses for living Fathers and white for deceased Dads and the Mayor and Govenor of Washington issued a Fathers Day proclamation.
In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge suggested that all States observe the day,but it wasn’t until 1972,when Dodd was 90 years of age, President Nixon designated the third Sunday of June as Fathers Day in America. Today the Holiday is celebrated in more than 50 Nations.
Dodd died in 1978 at the age of 96 and is buried near Her Husband and Father in a Family plot at Spokane’s Memorial Terrace…Her plaque reads…”Mother of Father’s Day ” This Fathers Day a meditation Garden will be unveiled there for all to visit .
